Cheraw Country Club

CCC offers an 18 hole, Par 72 course designed by Donald Ross in 1924, which is open year round to the public. Located in the Sand hills of South Carolina just an hour south of Pinehurst. Cheraw Country Club provides golfers an opportunity to enjoy a leisurely round of golf at a great rate.  With our wonderful southern climate we can offer play nearly every day of the year.  For a full day or weekend of play, CCC is located across from the Cheraw State Park golf course.

FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Thank you for your continued support during these most difficult times. Your participation in the decision making process will go a long way toward making this a more stable Club. We had our first tournament of the year and it was a success in my eyes. With the weather system that was forecasted to move into the area, we had a good cross section of the membership participate and for the most part avoided the major weather system that moved in later in the day.

The work on installing the drainage systems in the sand bunkers has begun and should show up in playability after storms such as we had on Saturday.  We are planning a Club work day on the first Saturday in May to do a few items that will relieve the grounds crew to do more important items on the course.

The Board of Directors has brought on two new members to fill the terms of Directors that resigned. Ray Woodley agreed to come on as Greens Director and Richard White will serve as Building and Grounds Director. We still have a vacancy to fill for Secretary. We will have a General Membership Meeting in June to vote on the new Directors for their new terms.

It is that time of year again when we need to hire lifeguards for the up coming pool season. If you are certified and would like to lifeguard please fill out an application in the Pro Shop.

Snail Mail or Save the Money? (Roger Wolfe/ Mike Griggs)
Did you know that we spend over $800 a year on mailings to our members?   To save that expense we plan to e-mail as many future communications as we can and to make use of our web site to post members only information, such as newsletters, announcements, etc.  If you don’t have access to e-mail or the web site and still want to receive the communication by snail mail, please let us know prior to May 10th 2008.  Beginning on May 15th we will cease our mailings except to those that notify us otherwise.  It’s a small step to reduce costs, but we are looking for way to put money back into the Cub, not into outside interest.   If you want to get communication via e-mail, just provide your e-mail address to Roger Wolfe or any of our friendly pro shop staff.  If you don’t want to use e-mail, but prefer to get your info off the web, then please take a look at our new site on May 1st.   Mike Griggs did a great job on it and if you have any suggestion for improvement be sure to let Mike know.

A committee has been formed to look at the fairway mowers and determine the direction to take. Whether to repair or replace. Any thanks to Horry-Georgetown Technical College for the repairs they made on our greens mower
Get ready—it’s almost here again!  We will be repeating our free youth golf clinic this summer for our members.  Non-members will be charged $30 to attend.  The focus of the clinic will once again be on etiquette, rules of the game and basis instruction.  In a somewhat different format, we plan to conduct the clinic in two week segments on Mondays and Saturdays of consecutive weeks.  The skills portion of week 1 will focus on the grip, stance, putting and chipping.  The skills focus in week two will be stance, posture, short irons and the driver.  The clinic will be held from 8:00 to 9:45 AM on June 2, 7, 9 and 14.  Each session will be limited to 8 students.  If more than 8 students sign up for a session,  then a second session will be conducted from 10:00 to 11:45 AM on those same days (June 2, 7, 9 and 14).   The clinic will be repeated on July 14, 19, 21 and 26.  Sign up for your preferred month.  We will be dividing the sessions by age groups.  All would-be Tiger Woods or Lorena Ochoas between the ages of ages 8-17 are invited to participate.

Please continue to repair ball marks on the greens and to rake sand traps. A little effort from all will greatly improve the playing conditions.

From The Board From the Tournament Director

We want to extend our most sincere appreciation to the over half of the membership who paid their assessments and dues.   Your commitment to the club has thwarted our immediate financial crisis and allowed us to pay our taxes and catch up with our creditors.  However, we are still not out of the woods.  We have upcoming bills for chemicals, seed, and equipment repairs that we budgeted to be covered by the remainder of the assessments.   We will be sending reminders later this month to members who have not yet made arrangements for payment.  Our club can only be as strong as the commitment of our members.  Once again the membership demonstrated that they see Cheraw Country Club is an important part of our community.  We look forward to the continued strong support of our all members.

Collegiality and the State Park
Tommy Wright, Buddy Brooks, Crawford Moore and Ron Greene met with Chesterfield Country Rep Ted Vick, Senator Vincent Sheheen, and Phil Gaines (Director of SC Parks, Recreation and Tourism / PRT) with the expressed purpose of exploring business practices that could be beneficial to both the State Park Golf Course and the Cheraw Country Club.  All parties agreed that the vitality of both entities is in the best interest of the State, County and City governments; the citizens of Chesterfield and surrounding counties; and both Golf Courses.  To that end, preliminary discussions on ways to “partner not compete” were conducted.  At first blush some of the ideas surfaced looked very promising as a source for economic growth.  Based on these initial discussions, Rep Vick and Senator Sheheen asked that PRT, the  Cheraw State Park, and Cheraw Country Club engage in more detailed follow-up sessions on a recurring basis and develop details for implementing mutually beneficial ideas.   In addition, Rep Vick and Senator Sheheen asked to be periodically updated on the progress being made and how each party gauged the success on this effort.  Representing the club at our first follow-up at 10:00AM on March 20 will be Tommy Wright, Roger Wolfe, Buddy Brooks and Ron Greene.  If you have specific ideas you would like us to pursue, please contact one of these individuals and look for feedback in upcoming communications!

We had out first tournament on Saturday the 15th, we had a good turn out and what turned out to be good weather. We played a Texas scramble, using the refined Stapleford points system, with computer matched teams which turned out to be very competitive with a tie for first and third place only behind by one point. Look forward to having more of these competitive tournaments this year!!!

Wednesday Night Dinners
Do you miss when we used to play Wednesday afternoon then rehash missed putts, great shots and “What were you thinking?” moments from the round over a couple of drinks and a bite to eat?  Well so do I, and I’m looking for a few good men who want to revive an old CCC tradition.  If you are relatively new to the area and never had the chance before, then jump on in.  So far, I’ve gotten verbal commitments from 3 other guys who will help with the cooking -- so what are we waiting for -- you, that’s what!  Come on out and sign up so we know how much food to prepare.  If you need more details see Jay Leach or Roger Wolfe.  There’s a new day dawning at Cheraw Country Club, be part of it.

Time for lifeguards to make application for summer employment.

Club work day May 3rd from 7:00 to 11:00,  a hotdog lunch and free golf for participants will be provided.
